What is Mentoring?

Mentoring

You can obtain help for your business in many ways including:

  • Training,
  • Mentoring
  • Coaching
  • Business Advice programme (providing a combination of the above)
  • Banks
  • Accountants etc
  • Suppliers
  • Customers
  • Friends
  • Family

Mentoring and Coaching are not the same.

Mentoring is a conversation about YOUR issues and a discussion about how to solve them. Ideas will be suggested and tested. You will benefit from your mentor’s experience but they should not be telling you “… it must be done this way…”. It is YOUR business and YOU must decide your best course of action.

You will be challenged, encouraged, helped, supported, shown where necessary, possible trained.

Mentoring is about WHAT you need to think about and do

Coaching is similar and in its purest form works on the premise that you are the expert and know how to do their job – coaching helps you set your goals find out HOW to achieve them by asking questions and challenging the responses.

I believe that no-one knows everything they need to know – you don’t know what you don’t know, therefore I normally start with coaching approach to set goals and then use a mix of coaching, mentoring, showing & training to help you understand what you need to do to achieve them.

No one can guarantee success but my approach is designed to minimise the risk of failure, and hence maximise the chance of success. If you understand where you are likely to fail, you can work around the issues, or possible realise that they are unsurmountable and a different approach is required

The mentoring process is driven by your needs, I can help you think through the process either to start, grow or re-invent your business and help you produce a clear route–map of what you will do.

I will provide confidential and independent input into your business

Mentoring is a process and where we discuss issues and ideas, set action and regularly meet to monitor and support progress. Typically, 5 to 10 sessions spread over 3 – 12 months, will be required per project although ad-hoc mentoring can be arranged as well as longer term support.

Please get in touch to arrange an informal meeting and see how I can help you
