MH Innovation was established in March 2015 to focus on helping businesses to be more successful in the development of their new business ideas by learning from my experience of planning not to fail.
This is achieved using a combination of coaching, mentoring, training and demonstration.

What is strategic Innovation Coaching?
Having spent over 40 years developing new ideas, firstly developing new and improved products and processes in the mining, glass and construction sectors, then moving into their commercial business development. Still developing new technology solutions but also planning their progress from prototype to commercial success.
I came to realise that the development of the technology, product or process is the easy bit. Making it a commercial success is where the idea is most likely to fail.
It is at this point that I started to get really interested in understanding Innovation, what it is and how to do it.
Both my experience and research showed that most of the ideas that we have, although interesting, are very unlikely to be commercially viable. (to see what I mean by this – see “What is commercial viability?” the page on “Definitions”)
After spending the past 29 years in business support, helping over 2000 businesses talk through their new ideas, Over 80% decide not to go ahead with them when they realise what is required and with a little thought, are not as good as they first expected.
Over the past 10 years I have helped 330 individuals assess their ideas and produce viability business plans through The Nottingham Trent University – Hive@Mansfield – Proof-of-Concept programme. This was a programme of 14 workshops over 12 weeks with weekly 1-2-1 mentoring to look at every aspect of their idea to give them a full understanding of what they will need to do to make their idea become a business success.
My mantra was “If you want to succeed, first you must plan not to fail”
My favourite quotation is by General Colin Powell:
“Organization doesn’t really accomplish anything. Plans don’t accomplish anything either. Theories of management don’t much matter. Endeavours succeed or fail because of the people involved. Only by attracting the best people will you accomplish great deeds”
Here he seems to be dismissing Plans but what he is really saying is that all the best plans start to fail as soon as you start implementing them. Stuff happens from day one. If you have a well researched plan, there is a chance that you have looked at most possibilities of potential failure (planning not to fail involves identifying the potential trip-wires and developing appropriate avoidance solutions). No one starts on a journey without some preparation. Innovation is more than a journey, it is an expedition into the unknown and we know from history of the failure of ill-prepared ones.
To be successful with Innovation, you must be strategic and therefore start with a Strategic Business Plan. This will identify the scope of the expedition and the opportunities for Innovation.
Innovation is about identifying a problem and coming up with a commercially successful solution.
